Mindsight Lock Box Review: Can a Box Fix Your Phone Habit?

The Mindsight Lock Box is for anyone who has set a screen time limit, tapped "ignore for today," and ended up back on Instagram five minutes later.

It fixes that with a timer and a lid. You put your phone inside, set the time, and the box stays shut until the time is up.

This is the lock box I own. I use it mostly for my phone, but you can also lock away snacks or an Xbox controller in there.

Here’s how it works, what I like, what I don’t, and who it’s for.

What is the Mindsight Lock Box?

The Mindsight Lock Box is a box with a timer built into the lid.

You put something inside, set a time between 1 minute and 30 days, and choose how strict you want the lock to be. When the timer ends, the box opens.

The box is opaque. Your phone is out of reach and out of sight, so notifications can’t bend your will.

It’s roomy inside. It easily fits 3 to 4 phones in regular cases, so one box can cover a whole household.

It runs on two AA batteries, and they come in the box. Mindsight says they last about six months.

How the Mindsight Lock Box works

Using it comes down to five steps.

1. Put in the batteries

Two AA batteries go in the lid. You only do this once every few months.

2. Add what you want to lock away

Open the lid and drop in your phone. Add anything else you want out of reach.

3. Set the timer

Use the buttons on the lid to set days, hours, and minutes.

The shortest lock is 1 minute. The longest is 30 days.

4. Pick a lock mode

Choose how strict you want the lock to be. I explain the three modes in the next section.

5. Confirm and close

Press the middle button to confirm. The screen blinks for 15 seconds, then the box locks and the countdown starts.

One thing to know: pressing any button during those 15 seconds cancels the timer. You’ll have to set it again.

The three Mindsight Lock Box modes

The mode decides how easy it is to change your mind.

⏳ Standard mode: The box opens when the timer ends. If you really need something early, you can open it with the unlock code. The code is a sequence of button presses, printed on a label under the box.

🏰 Fortress mode: The box opens when the timer ends, and there’s no unlock code. You wait. If you set a Fortress timer by mistake or have a real emergency, you can contact Mindsight and ask for an emergency code.

🔓 Lockbox Only mode: There’s no timer. The box stays locked until you enter the unlock code. This is handy when you just want a place to keep something shut.

If you’re new to lock boxes, Standard mode is a good place to start.

If you know you’ll cave, use Fortress mode.

And if you want Fortress mode to be even stricter, Mindsight can stop sending emergency codes to your email address. Just ask them.

What happens if the batteries die?

You replace them, and the timer picks up where it left off.

I tested this myself. I locked the box and waited until there were 57 seconds left on the timer. Then I pulled the batteries out.

The display turned off. When I put the batteries back in, the countdown started again at 57 seconds.

So dead batteries won’t reset your timer. And with about six months per set, you won’t be swapping them often.

Charging and space inside

There are small holes at the bottom of the box for charging cables. Your phone can charge while it’s locked away.

That makes it easy to build into a routine. I come home, toss my phone in, and enjoy an hour of peace.

Inside, the box measures 9 x 4.75 x 2.75 inches. That’s enough for 3 to 4 phones in regular cases.

If you need even more room, Mindsight is working on a Plus size ($50) for bigger or more items. It hasn’t shipped yet, so it’s one to look out for.

What else you can lock in a Mindsight Lock Box

This site is about using your phone less, so my phone is what goes in most often.

But the Mindsight Lock Box works for anything small you keep reaching for:

• Snacks and candy, if late-night snacking is the habit you want to break
• Vapes and cigarettes
• Game controllers and TV remotes
• Medication you want to keep safely out of reach
• Credit cards or cash, if impulse spending is the problem

People also use it to quit smoking. One reviewer on Mindsight’s site set a Fortress timer the night before, and their cigarettes stayed locked until the end of the next workday.

It works the same way for any habit. The box puts time between the craving and the action.

Using the Mindsight Lock Box with kids and family

You can use the box for yourself, for your kids, or for everyone at once.

Because it holds 3 to 4 phones, it works well as a family box. A few ways to use it:

• Phones away before dinner: Everyone drops their phone in an hour before dinner. The timer decides when phones come back, so you don’t have to.
• Homework time: Lock the phone or the game controller for the length of the homework session.
• Screen-free evenings: Lock devices after dinner and set the timer for the next morning.
• Make it a game: See how many evenings in a row the family can fill the box. Or give the person who goes longest without asking for their phone first pick of the movie.

The box settles the argument for you. You’re no longer the one saying no.

One thing to watch: in Standard and Lockbox Only mode, the unlock code is on a label under the box. A curious kid will find it. Use Fortress mode when you want the timer to be the only way in.

It fits one phone in a standard case. XL phones won’t fit.

It charges over USB-C instead of using AA batteries. It also has a charging slot, so your phone can charge while it’s locked.

For one person and one phone, it’s the tidier pick. For a household, or for anything besides a phone, I’d get the bigger Lock Box.

The weak spot is the unlock code under the box. Fortress mode solves that.
